Titanic

Movie: Titanic (1997)
AFI List #83 on the 2007 list was not included on the 1998 list
My List #27
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Ioan Gruffudd
My rating: ˜˜˜

Confession: This was the first time that I saw this movie. It came out when I was in high school and I guess my teenage thoughts of "well if everyone likes it, I won't" and my desire to be different from everyone else led to me shunning that movie. Then the reviews started pouring in and people were aghast that I still hadn't seen it. Now it became personal. I was never going to see that movie. And I didn't like that Leo DeCaprio was supposed to be my generation's heart throb. No thank you.

As I was going through the movie lists at the beginning of the year, my sister pointed out that I would now have to see Titanic. I was okay with that, it's been 13 years; I can let go of my teenage thoughts and see a movie that everyone likes and still be okay. But it still took me a good month and a half to actually watch it...

So, going in with very low expectations, and already knowing the ending, it could only go up from there right?

I liked the movie. I did. It wasn't great or fantastic, but it wasn't torture to watch. The story was different and better than I had imagined it to be. I can even say that I liked Leo's character and I liked a lot of the actors they used. I still won't seek out this movie, but I won't be so hasty to change the channel if it comes on TV. It was very long, almost to the point of distraction. That's one of my beefs with James Cameron, actually. One other thing that really caught my eye was the huge difference 13 years can do to computer graphics. Back then, the movie was praised for the CG effects, but they were so obvious and easy to see now.

And then of course, I have to mention the movie score. I've had both score CDs for years now, and James Horner is absolutely fantastic and totally deserved the Best Score Oscar for his work.

Did you hear that Cameron will be re-releasing Titanic in 2012 to be in 3D? I may just have to shun that one again just on principle...

I think I would shun Titanic in 3D right along with you.

And my favorite part of Titanic is the score. I love it!

I support and join your decision to shun the re-release in 3D on principle. Is this really necessary, hasn't America suffered enough?

I'm a fan of this flick, James Cameron, and Leo but I wouldn't see it in 3D. I'm sick of the extra prices and they don't even let you bring your own glasses. If I could just purchase one set and BYO-3D glasses I would be okay with (every once in a while).

Leonardo is one of my favorite actors nowadays. I love pretty much all of his movies. Blood Diamond is my favorite, but this one could have cut out the first hour and just gone straight to the iceberg as far as I am concerned. Plus, who didn't love Celine's song to go with it:) hehehehehe
